Shoot the Centerfold Sells Out in Florida & Gears Up for Vegas

January 30th was a picture-perfect day for over 60 photographers and models who attended the sold-out “Shoot the Centerfold” event at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, FL. Three of Playboy’s most respected photographers of past and present — Arny Freytag, David Mecey, and Jarmo Pohjaniemi – offered insightful instruction and technical advice on how the magazine creates its popular monthly centerfold image.

The next “Shoot the Centerfold” seminar and workshop has just been announced. The organizers are planning a special two-day event for June 4-5 at the Tropicana Hotel in Las Vegas. This will be one of the first major events to be held at the new Nikki Beach Club at the Tropicana, and will feature a red-carpet arrival, opening night VIP reception, and pool party for the attending models and photographers. In Fort Lauderdale, FL, the all-day event started with introductions from the instructors, who gave an overview of their creative process accompanied by slideshows of their amazing portfolios. Then after a lunch break with catering courtesy of the Hard Rock, attendees were divided into three groups and taken to various sets, which were professionally styled and lit. Everyone got plenty of time to shoot and interact with the beautiful models, aided by the helpful guidance of the photographers.

The models included a Playboy Centerfold, Miss March 2010 Kyra Milan, along with Playboy publication cover-model Melissa Jean and European model Ksenia Tsiulina. Each of the young women displayed presence, poise, and powerful posing skills throughout the day.

Attendee Jeaux McCormick of J. McCormick Photography (OMP Member #7682) was both impressed and inspired by the event. “I have been practicing photography for over 30 years and doing it professionally for more than a decade. Over the years I have attended many photography workshops and seminars that promised to teach you the secrets of great studio lighting, only to come away highly disappointed. I am happy to say that this was not the case with the  ’Shoot the Centerfold’ event. Arny, David and Jarmo were extremely straightforward in sharing their secrets with all those who attended. I learned scores of things that I thought I already knew as well as some things I never even thought of. This was hands-down the best photography investment I have made in a long time.”

After the workshops were over, the group reconvened for a wrap-up of the day’s events as well as some exciting giveaways from participating sponsors including Hensel USA, SunBounce, Samy’s Camera, and

Organizer Jon Paulsin summed up the proceedings in this way: “It was an amazing exchange of energy between the attendees and the guys (Arny, David and Jarmo).”

Hensel USA’s Director of Sales Mark Mather added, “After being invited to the first Shoot the Centerfold advertising production, I was blown away by some of the best lighting techniques that I have ever seen!”

A pre-event party hosted at Club Pangaea the night before allowed the attendees to mix and mingle with the models and presenters and set the tone for the seminar. Judging from the enthusiastic response from photographers and models alike, Shoot the Centerfold in South Florida was a great success.

More events are being planned in cities around the U.S. as well as exotic locales abroad. Streaming video seminars and DVDs will also be available in the near future.

“Shoot the Centerfold” is designed for photographers of all experience levels, from beginning amateurs to working professionals. If you are interesting in getting more information, or seeing photos and video previews from the event, visit the official website at
